Timbre Shift
Thisparameterworksonlyonmulti‐samplekeymaps,andchangestherootselectionforeach
keyyouplay.Withthisparameteryoucanradicallyalterthecurrentlayer’stimbre(basicsound
characteristics).Thenatureofthechangedependsonthe timbreitself,sothisparametercallsfor
experimentation.Basically,timbreshifting
changesanote’stimbrebyimposingdifferent
harmonicqualitiesontothenote.Atimbre‐shiftednoteretainsitsoriginalpitch,butits
harmonicsarethoseofthesametimbreatahigherorlowerpitch.Positivevaluesforthis
parametertendtobrightenasound,whilenegativevaluesdarken.
Here’san
example.Ifyoushiftthetimbreup4semitones,thenplayingC4willresultinthepitch
C4,butwillactuallyplaythesamplenormallyassignedtoG
#
3,andshiftitspitchupfour
semitones.Thiswillincreasetheplaybackrateofthe sample,soalthoughthepitchremains
normal,thetimbreisbrighter.You’dgetthesameeffectbysettingtheXposeparameteronthe
KEYMAPpageto‐4semitones,thensettingtheAdjuston
thePITCHpageto+4semitones.For
multi‐samplelayerswithnarrowkeyranges,largeamountsoftimbreshiftingwillcause
differentsamplerootstobeplayedback.
Playback Mode
Thisgivesyounumerousoptionsformanipulatingthesamplesinthecurrentlayerasyou
triggerthem.Normalleavesthesamplesunaffected,whileReverseplaystheminreverse.Ata
valueofReverse,thesampleswillcontinuetoloopaslongasnotesaresustained.Toplaythem
justonce
inreverse,youwouldadjustthelengthofthelayer’samplitudeenvelope(explained
laterinthischapter).BiDirect(bidirectional)causesthesamplestoloopinfinitely,alternating
betweennormalandreversedplayback.Noisereplacesthesampleswithawhitenoise
generator.

Alternative Switch (AltControl and AltMethod)
Many,butnotall,PC3Ksamplerootshavebeenpre‐assignedacarefullychosenalternate
samplestartpointthatcanbeselectedusingtheAlternateSwitchfeature(AltControland
AltMethodparameters).Thisfeatureallowsyoutocontrolthesampleplaybackstart/endtime
triggeredbyanycontrolsource.(Thealternatesamplestart
pointcanbeadjustedbyeditinga
sample,seeEditingSamples on page 14‐9andTheTRIMPage on page 14‐12fordetails.)
UsetheAltControlparametertospecifyacontrolsourcethatwillcausethesampletobeginor
endattheAltpoint.ThenusetheAltMethodparametertochoosebetweenswitched
and
continuouscalculationoftheAltpoint.IfthevalueofAltMethodisSwitched,thePC3Kwilluse
theAltpointwhentherelevantcontrolsourceisatavaluegreaterthan64atNote Start.If
AltMethodisContinuous,theAltpointwillvarydependingonthevalue
oftherelevantcontrol
sourceatNoteStart.
Asanexample,supposeyou’ reworkingwithaflutekeymapandwishtocontroltheamountof
chiffheardatthebeginningofthesound.OntheKEYMAPpageintheProgramEditor,set
AltControltoMWheel.NowtheModWheelcontrolshow
